Students attending Manatee Community College should complete the Associate of Arts degree which will include:

State Mandated Common Course Prerequisites.  
All students must complete one course in each of the following cognate areas:

Biology                                                              3 credit hours
BSC 1005 General Biology or
BSC 2011C Fundamentals of Biology II

Economics                                                          3 credit hours
Political Science                                                3 credit hours
POS 1041 American Government or
POS 1112 American State and Local Government

Psychology                                                          3 credit hours
PSY 2012 General Psychology

Sociology                                                            3 credit hours
SYG 2000 General Sociology

Cross-Cultural Course                                          3 credit hours
ANT 2000 Intro to Anthropology or
WST 2010 Intro to Women's Studies

A student must complete both SOW 3203 (The American Social Welfare System) and SOW 3302 (Introduction to Social Work) prior to admission to the BSW Program.  A minimum grade of "B" is required in SOW 3203 and SOW 3302.  It is preferable, though not required, to take these two courses during the same semester to facilitate program admission.

All undergraduate social work majors must complete the following courses,  maintaining a 2.75 average in social work courses.

SOW 4233        Social Welfare Policy and Programs
SOW 4510L      Field Placement
SOW 4510        Integrative Seminar
Total: 44 hours

Field placement occurs in the final semester of study and includes completion of an internship of 32 hours per week in a social service agency for a total of 480 hours.
