The faculty and staff of the College of Education at USF Sarasota-Manatee welcome you to your practica and internship experiences! We want to help assure that these field experiences are both positive and productive for you. Please note these key points that will help you understand and prepare for the field experiences:

First Semester:

  • Elementary Education majors enroll in academic classes

  • Special Education majors enroll in Level 1 practicum

  • Meet with your advisor to plan your program/field experiences.

  • All other majors undertake practica and internship through the Tampa campus. Please see your advisor and program listing at COEDU Tampa for details.

Field experiences differ greatly from academic classes:

  • You synthesize academic learning and apply it in a real classroom

  • You meet in discussion seminars with your University Supervisor

  • The student placement process is complex

    • County school districts and USF collaborate

    • Time is required to communicate the need for and obtain placements

    • Factors beyond student preference are considered

    • Therefore, students must follow special guidelines and dates for permits and registration; follow your major's link to the left for details.

Professionalism Counts!
It is important to remember that these field experiences are your first entry into the teaching profession. You will be seen as a teacher, not a student, in the eyes of the children, teachers, principals, and districts with which you work.  Remember, everyone in the district in which you are placed is a prospective employer.  The school and the students are excited to work with you and expectations are high so professionalism is crucial.

Changes - Notify COEDU immediately!
Once you submit your registration permit request or your final internship application, it is very important that you immediately communicate any changes in your name, address, phone or your placement preferences or if you can no longer participate in your field experience. Please submit an COEDU Information Change Form as soon as any relevant data or you ability to intern changes.  Failure to provide timely information may result in a placement outside of your preferences or you may miss important directions and/or placement information.

Remember that a lot of time and resources go into making placements. Schools, teachers and students are excitedly awaiting you, so it’s important to provide ample notice if you cannot participate.  The University expects that only medical or other extenuating circumstances will preclude a student from starting or completing a field experience once permit/application has been made.

USF Email
Plan to use or check your USF email frequently throughout the Internship/Practicum process (from application/permit request through completion of the experience).  The SMC College of Education will ONLY send communications to your university email. It is your responsibility to check it regularly or forward it to a preferred email account!
