Level Two:  Connect majors to employment opportunities

So you've chosen a major, but now what?  What will you be able to do with your degree once you've completed your education?  Many students think there is a simple match from one major to one career, but this is simply not the case.  For most careers, there are a variety of paths you can take to reach your goal.  Your major, skills and previous work experience will all play a role.

What Can I Do With This Major?

What Can I Do With This Major? is our primary resource for connecting majors to careers.  This program provides detailed information about the career options related to a wide variety of majors.  Choose your major (or one that you are considering) to get a list of career areas, potential employers and strategies to reach your goals.  What Can I Do With This Major? often includes information about careers you might not have thought of otherwise.

The tools below can provide more information to match your major to career options.

Major-to-Career Converter

This tool is sponsored by Monster.com.  You'll be asked to enter your major and then it will give you a list of possible job titles.  If you'd like, it will also provide a list of current job openings in your area.

Prentice Hall's Student Success Major Exploration

This tool is compiled with information from faculty at universities around the country.  It includes a description of each major as well as the coursework that may be involved and suggestions for how to translate the major into a career field.

World of Work

Review the World of Work Map to discover what kind of work is right for you.  Are you a Data, Things, Ideas, or a People Person?  The World of Work map also provides profiles of individuals working in every area.

Job Shadowing

Job Shadowing activities, like the Shadow A Mentor program, offer students an inside look at career options.  By spending as little as one afternoon with a professional working in your field of interest, you can get a much clearer idea if that career is right for you.  By asking questions and getting more information from a professional, you can also connect what you're learning in class to what you'll need to know in the future, and you can make sure you're on the right path to reach your goals.
