USF Sarasota-Manatee Hosts African
American Read-in Chain, Children's Author Linda Trice Attending (Sarasota, FL January 20, 2004) – USF Sarasota-Manatee will host the African American Read-In Chain on Monday, February 2, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Westside Student Center. This free event is open to the public and part of the university’s Black History Month celebration. An event highlight will be a reading by local children’s author Linda Trice at 3 p.m. Trice will read from her book, Charles Drew: Pioneer of Blood Plasma, a biography of the African American surgeon who conducted research on the properties and preservation of blood plasma and was a leader in establishing blood banks. Trice’s book is geared toward ages 13-17, and may be of interest to college students. “The National African American Read-In Chain marks its fifteenth year celebrating the contributions of African American authors and promoting literacy as part of Black History Month,” said Nancy Allen, USF Sarasota-Manatee reference librarian. “This event is sponsored by the Black Caucus of the National Council of Teachers of English, and will take place across America in libraries, churches, bookstores, schools, and universities,” added Janice Eitelgeorge, Ph, D. professor of Children’s Literature in a Diverse Society.
