USF Board of Trustees
appoints USF Sarasota/Manatee Campus Board
(Sarasota,
FL, September 21, 2001) - The University of South Florida Board of
Trustees today appointed the USF Sarasota/Manatee Campus Board during its
regular meeting in Tampa. The
four board members are:
· Charles R. Baumann,
CPA, Kerkering, Barberio & Company;
·
Lynette Edwards, Assistant
Superintendent of Academics, Manatee County School Board;
·
Jan Smith, President, Jan Smith and
Company; and,
·
Cliff Walters, Attorney, Blalock,
Landers, Walters & Vogler, P.A.
They will
join USF Trustee Robert L. Soran, who was appointed to the USF Board of
Trustees in July, and was designated by them to be a member of the USF
Sarasota/Manatee Campus Board.
Effective
July 1, 2001, the Florida State Legislature passed legislation requiring
USF’s regional campuses to establish their own boards, be operated and
maintained as separate organizational and budget entities of USF, and each
campus’s state appropriations are to be separate line items in the
annual state budget. The new campus governance put into statute USF President Judy
Genshaft’s plan to make the regional campuses more autonomous.
“This is an excellent campus board and it will clearly link the
university’s development to the community’s educational needs,” says
Dr. Genshaft
For the
Sarasota/Manatee campus, the legislation specifically states that the
Board of Trustees of the University of South Florida appoints the campus
board members as recommended by the President of USF.
Three of the board members must live in Manatee County and two in
Sarasota County, and serve four-year staggered terms.
Edwards, Smith and Walters live in Manatee County, and Baumann and
Soran live in Sarasota County. Edwards
and Baumann are also USF alumni.
"This
is a defining moment for the Sarasota/Manatee campus.
I know our new board members are dedicated to advancing USF's major
league impact in the community," says campus CEO Dr. Laurey Stryker. "We have lots of positive challenges ahead."
The campus
board members’ powers include:
· Review and approval of
the annual legislative budget for the campus;
·
Approve and submit an annual operating
plan and budget to the USF Board of Trustees; and,
·
Entering into central support service
contracts with the USF Board of Trustees for any services the
Sarasota/Manatee campus cannot provide more economically.
The
University of South Florida Sarasota/Manatee regional campus offers
courses in 40 degree programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels,
now serving 2,500 students annually.
It is located at the Sarasota/Manatee County line on 140 acres,
touching the shoreline of Sarasota Bay and adjacent to the
Sarasota/Bradenton International Airport.
The regional campus is part of the University of South Florida, the
second largest university in Florida with more than 37,000 students, a
Research I institution, and one of the 20 largest universities in the
United States.
