USF Sarasota-Manatee offers multiple continuing education opportunities for the new year SARASOTA, FL, (January 9, 2006) - New Year’s resolutions run the gamut, and many are notoriously difficult to maintain for more than just a few months without some external motivation and assistance. However, for people with New Year’s resolutions to enhance their job skills or expand their knowledge, local help and motivation is just around the corner. USF Sarasota-Manatee offers many opportunities for people to enroll in classes to further their education – even without being officially admitted to the university. Whether motivated by career advancement or personal enrichment, people of all types, ages and backgrounds are welcomed to enroll in USF Sarasota-Manatee classes to take advantage of opportunities for non-degree-seeking students. It’s not too late to enroll for the current Spring 2006 semester. Classes began Monday, January 9, 2006 but non-degree seeking students can register for spring semester classes now through Friday, January 13, 2006. Non-degree coursework allows an individual to sample course offerings, strengthen their skills before applying for admission to a degree or certificate program, gain the skills and knowledge required for career advancement or a career change, or achieve personal growth. USF Sarasota-Manatee courses are offered on weekdays and Saturdays and, for the convenience of working adults, many courses meet during late afternoon or evening hours. Classes are held at the university’s Sarasota-Manatee campus on U.S. 41 just north of University Parkway, and also at the university’s south Sarasota county location at MCC Venice. A non-degree seeking student can take any USF course, both undergraduate and graduate, for which he or she meets the prerequisites, and in which space is available. These students are also entitled to use of all university facilities, including the library, career center, and fitness center. Below is a sampling of courses available for non-degree-seeking students: Introduction to Hospitality and Lodging Management, offered by the School of Hotel and Restaurant Management, may be applied to the Hospitality certificate program. Principles of Management, Basic Marketing, Law and Business as well as fifth year accounting courses that may be required to sit for the CPA exam. Social Foundations of Education, Learning and Developing Child, Learning Principles Applied to Instruction, and Planning and Organizing for Instruction may be applied for teacher certification. Principles of Information Security and Introduction to Network Security will be part of a new Information Security program that is being developed at the campus. In the College of Arts and Sciences, non-degree students may enroll in many courses, including Gender Cross-Cultural Perspective, Ethnic Diversity in the US, Police & Juvenile Delinquency, Substantive Criminal Law, Selected American Authors, Traditional English Grammar, War to Peace Transition, Abnormal Psychology, Behavior Modification, Perception, American Social Welfare System, Intro to Social Work, and Intro to Women’s Studies. Non-degree seeking student applicants must submit a non-degree application, $20 non-refundable fee, immunization records, proof of Florida residency for at least one year (to qualify for in-state tuition), and transcript copies (if prerequisites are required). Florida residents aged 60 and over may audit select USF courses on a space available basis. Additionally, USF Sarasota-Manatee’s Senior Academy program offers a wide range of additional non-credit courses of special interest to mature adults.
