2003 Distinguished
Alumni Awards presented
Seven recipients honored
(Sarasota, FL, June 3, 2003) -- The
Manatee/Sarasota USF Alumni Association presented seven 2003 Distinguished
Alumni Awards (DAA) at College Hall on May 15. A panel of business
and community leaders selected the award recipients; they reviewed
nominations for 13 individuals. Each recipient was given an engraved
trophy topped with a brass bull, the university's mascot. Alumni of
all USF campuses - Tampa, St. Petersburg, Lakeland and Sarasota/Manatee -
who reside in Manatee and Sarasota counties were eligible to be nominated.
More than 9,000 USF alumni live and work in the area. The 2003
awards event was the local chapter's sixth year sponsoring the program.
The seven 2003 DAA
recipients are:

Tim Clarke,
Community Leadership Award, Chairman of Clarke Advertising & Public
Relations;

Roger Frazee,
Campus Service Award, Partner with Financial Services Network and
President of the Manatee/Sarasota Chapter USF Alumni Association;
-
Alice Gross,
Professional Achievement Award, Executive Community Health Nursing
Director of the Manatee County Public Health Department;
-
David Hicks,
President's Award, President of Aladdin-Ward Electric and Retired
Brigadier General in U.S. Army;
-
John Laurie,
Community Leadership Award, Partner and Shareholder with Wyman, Green
& Blalock, Inc.;
-
Diana Michel,
Campus Service Award, President of Michel Sports Marketing and Vice
President of the Manatee/Sarasota Chapter USF Alumni Association; and,
-
Dr. Richard Pierce,
Professional Achievement Award, Senior Scientist and Director of
the Center for Exotoxicology at Mote Marine Laboratory.
The other six alumni
nominated were: Angela Brewer, President of Angie Brewer & Associates;
Arden Fowler, Founder of Gloria Musicae of Sarasota; Jerry Gray, Executive
Director of the Sarasota County Growth Management Business Center; Susan
Grundy, CPA and Principal with Kerkering, Barberio & Co., P.A.; James A.
Jones, East Manatee Editor of the Bradenton Herald-East Manatee Herald;
and, David McDonald, Executive Director of Port Manatee.
The Green & Gold Ribbon
Panel of Judges were: Marianne Barneby, Ward 2 Bradenton City
Councilwoman; Mary Cantrell, Ph.D. and Director of the Manatee Technical
Institute; Patricia Caswell, Executive Director of the Sarasota County
Arts Council; Brian Flynn, Chief Executive Officer of Manatee Memorial
Hospital; Sheryl Greene, News Reporter for WWSB-Channel 40; David Mills,
District 2 Sarasota County Commissioner; Mac Tully, President and
Publisher of the Bradenton Herald-East Manatee Herald; and, Tom Tryon,
Editorial Page Editor of the Sarasota Herald-Tribune.

The University of South
Florida Sarasota/Manatee Campus offers 29 accredited degree programs for
students to complete at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
Currently serving 2,500 students annually, the campus is located at the
