Former Congressman Dan Miller to speak on “Partisanship and the 2008 Election”

SARASOTA, FL (March 14, 2007) – On March 20, 2007 at 3:45 p.m., former United States Congressman Dan Miller will give a lecture entitled “Partisanship and the 2008 Election” at the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee.

The lecture, which is free and open to the public, will be held in the Selby Auditorium on the university’s new campus, located at 8350 N. Tamiami Trail (U.S. 41) across from the Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport.

“Partisanship in Washington is turning off the American people,” Miller said.  “The extremes of both parties are critical in the primaries and in securing the nominations, but bipartisanship will be the key to victory in the 2008 elections.”

Elected to the House of Representatives in 1992, Miller represented the Thirteenth Congressional District of Florida.  A former college professor and businessman, Miller had never held a public office before his election to Congress.  In keeping with his self-imposed ten year term limit, he retired from Congress in 2003.

Miller graduated from Manatee High School and following a career in teaching, became a partner in the family owned Miller Enterprises.  He is also the past chairman of the Manatee Chamber of Commerce and Manatee Memorial Hospital.

During his ten years in the House of Representatives, he served on the House Appropriations Committee, the Budget Committee, and the Committee on Government Reform.  As a member of the Government Reform Committee, Miller served as Chairman of the Census subcommittee with oversight of the U.S. Census Bureau.

After leaving Congress, Miller returned to academia.  In 2003 he was a Fellow at the Institute of Politics at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.  He currently teaches at the University of South Florida and is developing the Manasota Institute of Public Policy and Leadership at USF Sarasota-Manatee.  This semester, Miller is teaching a popular course on Congress and Political Power at the USF Sarasota-Manatee Academy for Lifelong Learning.

The lecture is part of the John Sievers Moran Distinguished Lecture Series and is sponsored by the USF Sarasota-Manatee Academy for Lifelong Learning.  Seating is limited at the event.  For more information or to register, call (941) 359-4296.
