(Sarasota,
FL, September 16, 2002) -- Increasing awareness
among Sarasota and Manatee County residents about how the University of
South Florida Sarasota/Manatee can meet their higher education needs is
the main goal behind the first ever USF Sarasota/Manatee Week, taking
place October 13-19, 2002.
“Community residents and businesses
have higher education needs,” says Campus Chief Executive Officer Laurey
Stryker. “With the campus growth plan in place at USF Sarasota/Manatee,
we must create more ways for people to find out how we can help them.
Inviting the public to the campus during USF Sarasota/Manatee Week
provides a great opportunity to get information on completing that college
degree, going on to graduate school, or taking classes for personal
enrichment.”
Planned events on the campus during
USF Sarasota/Manatee Week take in many aspects of how the university
interacts with and serves the community. Here is a partial list of
activities:
-
Sunday, October 13, is the 9th
annual Brunch on the Bay, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., a student scholarship
fundraiser attended by 1,000 local community leaders and USF supporters;
-
Monday, October 14, 5:00 to
8:00 p.m., is the annual joint chamber of commerce networking event, for
the first time held at USF Sarasota/Manatee instead of
Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport;
-
Tuesday, October 15, 12:00
to 1:30 p.m., is the USF Athletics Luncheon featuring Athletic Director
Lee Roy Selmon, Men’s Basketball Coach Seth Greenberg and Women’s Tennis
Coach Gigi Fernandez;
-
Thursday, October 17, Campus
Open House, including many opportunities to learn about programs, take
tours, attend presentations and be entertained in the evening by STEP
AFRIKA!; and,
-
Saturday, October 19, USF
Bull Run, 8:00 a.m., a 5K and 1-Mile event organized by the Bradenton
Runners Club and USF alumni.
The
University of South Florida Sarasota/Manatee Campus offers 25 degree
programs for students to complete at the undergraduate and graduate
levels. Currently serving 2,500 students annually, the campus is located
at the Sarasota/Manatee County line on 140 acres at University Parkway and
U.S. 41, touching the shoreline of Sarasota Bay and adjacent to the John & Mable Ringling Museum of Art and Sarasota/Bradenton International
Airport. It is part of the University of South Florida, the second
largest university in Florida with more than 39,000 students, a Research I
institution, and one of the top 20 largest universities in the United
States.
