SARASOTA-MANATEE HOLDS FIRST HONORS CONVOCATION Dr. Laurey Stryker, USF Sarasota-Manatee Chief Executive Officer, said, “We are extremely proud of their achievements and wanted administration, faculty and staff to recognize them in a separate ceremony.” Two outstanding USF Sarasota-Manatee students are receiving awards at honors convocation. Rhonda Russell is a first generation college graduate. She is the youngest of nine siblings and has two children of her own; one is graduating from high school this year. Working full-time and going to school was a challenge but Russell’s passion for learning and her determination to succeed carried her through. Michael Niewodowski, was given a special award for winning first place in the Honors College Symposium contest held on the USF Tampa campus. His winning essay was about how his life was affected by the events of 9/11. Michael was a grill chef at Windows of the World in NYC and was getting ready to go to work when the planes hit. He lost several friends. For students to graduate with honors a baccalaureate candidate must have a grade point average of at least a 3.5 out of a possible 4.0. Special honors designations are even more rigorous, Cum Laude requires a 3.5-3.7 GPA, Magna Cum Laude a 3.7-3.9 GPA and the highest Summa Cum Laude a GPA 3.9-4.0.
