USF Sarasota/Manatee Campus Board to have inaugural
meeting October 24
(Sarasota, FL, October 15, 2001)
– The University of South Florida Sarasota/Manatee Campus Board will
have its inaugural meeting on Wednesday, October 24, 3:30 to 5:00 p.m., at
the bayfront campus's College Hall Music Room.
The public is invited.
Board members will approve the 2002
legislative budget request the campus has submitted.
The plan includes increased enrollment and new facilities at the
Crosley Estate, on property already owned by USF.
The impact of state budget cuts is also on the agenda. USF President Dr. Judy Genshaft will attend.
Effective July 1, 2001, the Florida
State Legislature passed legislation requiring USF’s regional campuses
to establish their own boards, be operated and maintained as separate
organizational and budget entities of USF, and each campus’s state
appropriations are to be separate line items in the annual state budget.
On September 21, the USF Board of Trustees appointed boards for all
three of the USF regional campuses.
The
five members of the Sarasota/Manatee Campus Board are:
·
Charles R. Baumann,
CPA, Kerkering, Barberio & Company, Sarasota County resident;
·
Lynette Edwards,
Assistant Superintendent of Academics, Manatee County School Board,
Manatee County resident;
·
Jan Smith,
President, Jan Smith and Company, Manatee County resident;
·
Robert L. Soran,
President and Chief Operating Officer of Uniroyal Technology Corporation,
Sarasota County resident; and,
·
Cliff Walters,
Attorney with Blalock, Landers, Walters & Vogler, P.A., Manatee County
resident.
Smith
is the Chairman of the board. Soran
was appointed to the USF Board of Trustees in July, and was designated by
the Board of Trustees to be a member of the Sarasota/Manatee campus board.
“I
am proud to serve the USF Sarasota/Manatee campus as Chairman of its first
Campus Board,” says Smith. “USF
is our community’s public university and the board is eager to achieve
the campus’s ambitious growth goals.”
The
campus board members’ powers include:
·
Review and approve
the annual legislative budget for the campus;
·
Approve and submit
an annual operating plan and budget to the USF Board of Trustees; and,
·
Entering into
central support service contracts with the USF Board of Trustees for any
services the Sarasota/Manatee campus cannot provide more economically.
The
University of South Florida Sarasota/Manatee regional campus offers 25
degree programs with courses in 40 total programs at the undergraduate and
graduate levels, now serving 2,500 students annually.
It is located at the Sarasota/Manatee County line on 140 acres,
touching the shoreline of Sarasota Bay and adjacent to the
Sarasota/Bradenton International Airport.
The regional campus is part of the University of South Florida, the
second largest university in Florida with more than 37,000 students, a
Research I institution, and one of the top 20 largest universities in the
United States.
