Outspoken critic on
grades, tests and rewards to speak at USF Sarasota/Manatee
Admission is free at Sudakoff Center
(Sarasota, FL, October 17, 2002) -- On Friday,
November 1, at 7:00 p.m., former teacher Alfie Kohn, an outspoken critic
of the focus on grades and test scores, rewards and punishments will speak
at the USF/New College Sudakoff Center. Admission is free.
Kohn heralds the
importance of working with children to foster their intrinsic motivation
to learn. He also tackles the tough topics -- standards,
accountability, and high-stakes testing.
Described by Time
Magazine as "perhaps the country's most outspoken critic of
education's fixation on grades and test scores," Alfie Kohn has written
eight books on education and human behavior. He has written for most
of the leading education periodicals, including five cover articles for
Phi Delta Kappa.
Several local
organizations are sponsoring the Kohn talk: Children First; Family
Partnership Center; Forty Carrots Family Center; Gold Seal Project of
Sarasota; Project Child Care; Time-Warner Cable; and, University of South
Florida.
Contact the Manatee County Head Start office
at 941-748-0137 to make reservations. Seating is limited so call
now.
For more information about Kohn, see his web site,

The
University of South Florida Sarasota/Manatee Campus offers 25 degree
programs for students to complete at the undergraduate and graduate
levels. Currently serving 2,500 students annually, the campus is located
at the Sarasota/Manatee County line on 140 acres at University Parkway and
U.S. 41, touching the shoreline of Sarasota Bay and adjacent to the John & Mable Ringling Museum of Art and Sarasota/Bradenton International
Airport. It is part of the University of South Florida, the second
largest university in Florida with more than 39,000 students, a Research I
