Two local residents honored
at USF Tampa fall 2001 commencement ceremonies
(Sarasota,
FL, December 17, 2001) – The University of South Florida Alumni
Association has given the Outstanding Senior Award for the fall
2001 semester to Jill Reagan, daughter of Manatee County resident
and USF alumnus Ronald Reagan. The award recognizes the graduating senior
who embodies leadership, school spirit, community service, character and
scholarship.
Reagan
received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications from the College of
Arts and Sciences on Saturday, December 15, in Tampa.
Her scholastic achievements include Dean’s List, USF Student
Leader of the Year, Florida Academic Scholar, Golden Key National Honor
Society, Honors Convocation and National Society of Collegiate Scholars.
Her
leadership involvement includes Alpha Delta Pi Sorority President,
Panhellenic Council, Order of Omega Greek Honor Society, USF Ambassadors
and Senator for the College of Arts and Sciences.
Reagan’s
contributions to the community include campaigning to elect Ronald Reagan
(running for State Representative), Ronald McDonald House Volunteer, Earth
Charter Summit Facilitator, HRGTF Volunteer, and Greek IMACT Weekend.
Reagan
states “USF and the Tampa community are now my home.
The energy I felt for USF as I hit that first speed bump on my
first drive onto campus has not faded; it has multiplied.
As I look forward into the future, I see myself in yet another
scope: as an active
alumna.”
At the same
commencement ceremony, Elizabeth “Liz” Girvin Lindsay received
an honorary doctorate of business.
Lindsay was the first USF graduate to be appointed to the Florida
Board of Regents and was chairman in 1997.
The board is now dissolved.
Lindsay is
founder and president of Bairns’ Associates, Inc. in Sarasota.
The privately held construction company specializes in custom
homes, remodeling, interior design and space planning. Since 1986, she has also served as president and partner of
L3 Farms, a vegetable, citrus and cattle-raising operation in Manatee
County. From 1973 to 1982,
Lindsay was vice president of construction and remodeling for Lindsay
Publishing in Sarasota. The
company owned the Sarasota Herald-Tribune before it was sold to The New
York Times Company.
A 1983
graduate of the Executive MBA Charter Class at USF, Lindsay’s
affiliation with the university has been extremely strong.
She served as a member of the National Alumni Association Board and
as its 1993-94 president. In
1988, Lindsay received both the College of Business Administration’s
prestigious Award of Merit and the Alumni Association’s Distinguished
Alumni Award. She now serves
as a trustee for the USF Foundation, Inc., the College of Business
Admissions, and as a member of The Dean’s Circle.
Lindsay has
also volunteered for programs that have benefited Sarasota and other
communities. She directed a
$5 million campaign to build Sarasota’s Asolo Center for the Performing
Arts and was co-founder of the Sarasota Women’s Exchange.
In 1989, she received the Florida Recognition Award from the
Florida Arts Council and was recognized as Goodwill’s Citizen of the
Year. Lindsay has been a
member of many boards and foundations, including the Ringling School of
Art and Design, the John & Mable Ringling Museum of Art, the New
College Library Association, the Sarasota County United Way, Hospice of
Southwest Florida, and Mote Marine Laboratory.
She is
currently active with the USF Sarasota/Manatee Regional Campus as a member
of its Community Leadership Council.
