USF Sarasota-Manatee to hold information session for the Master of Arts in Teaching K-6 SARASOTA, FL (June 2, 2006) – To stave off the teacher shortage in the state of Florida, the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee has implemented the Master of Arts in Teaching K-6, a 56-credit hour program designed for people with bachelor’s degrees in programs other than teaching. On Tuesday, June 6 from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m., USF Sarasota-Manatee will be holding an information session for people of all ages to find out more about the program. The session, to be held in the College Hall Music Room, will be an opportunity for prospective students to speak with professors and current students and have their questions about the MAT program and USF Sarasota-Manatee answered. “The Master of Arts in Teaching K-6 is for people who want to be the best teachers,” said Judith Craig, program administrator in the college of education. “It’s for people who want to change careers, broaden their horizons or for those who maybe always wanted to be a teacher and were talked out of it.” Students can complete the program in five semesters if they attend full-time, or eight semesters if they attend part-time. The ages and backgrounds of the students typically vary. “We get people with backgrounds in nursing, accounting, criminology, engineering and a host of other degrees,” Craig said. “Because they come from such a wide range of backgrounds, the group is very stimulating and diverse.” The MAT program will teach students the basic foundations of education and how to teach every subject in elementary school. It will also provide internships that will give students real-life experience. “All of our students that have graduated from the program have gotten jobs in teaching,” Craig said. “They come out the brightest and the best.” For more information about the Master of Arts in Teaching K-6 or the information sessions, please call Judith Craig at (941)359-4448. USF Sarasota-Manatee is an upper-level campus for those with an associate’s or bachelor’s degree interested in pursuing a baccalaureate or master’s degree, professional certification, or continuing education credit. The regional campus offers the prestige of a nationally ranked research university with the convenience of a hometown campus, including classes in south Sarasota County at Manatee Community College Venice. |
