Visiting scholar to give philosophical lecture for Senior Academy

(Sarasota, FL - February 1, 2006) - Through the centuries, philosophical discussions about science vs. faith have helped people decipher their own beliefs.

On February 21, a visiting scholar intends to help Sarasota-Manatee area residents further clarify their own philosophical underpinnings.

Dr. Walter Mead, professor emeritus of political science at Illinois State University, will speak about “Science and Faith: A New Approach to Bridging the Gap.” The lecture is sponsored by the USF Senior Academy, and will start at 4 pm at the Sudakoff Center, located on the USF Sarasota-Manatee campus.

Open to the public at no charge, Mead’s presentation is part of  the Senior Academy’s John Sievers Moran Distinguished Lecture Series.  While the lecture will begin at 4 p.m., there will be refreshments provided at 3:30 p.m.

A widely-published author and lecturer, Mead served on the faculty of Illinois State from 1967 to his retirement in 1995.  He earned his B.A. in philosophy from Carleton College in 1956, and took B.D. in social ethics from Yale in 1960 with further studies in political philosophy at Duke leading to M.A. and Ph.D. degrees there.

Author of Extremism and Cognition:  Styles of Irresponsibility in American Society, and The United States Constitution:  Personalities, Principles and Issues, Mead has completed research for a new book, From Philosophy to Politics, and is working on original research articles and a book-length manuscript in the areas of value theory.

“For the last 500 years, there has been a seemingly irresolvable conflict between the methodology and the substantive content of science and faith,” Mead states. “Recent thinking provides for a promising and more responsible understanding of the common ground and validity of both.”

USF Sarasota-Manatee’s Senior Academy is a continuing education program for mature adults.  It is administered in a collegial environment "by the members for the members" under the auspices of the university’s Office of Academic Affairs.

The Moran lectures are given three times each year at the Senior Academy.  For more information, call (941)359-4296.
