WILLIAM G. SELBY AND MARIE SELBY FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS GIVEN TO 34 USF SARASOTA-MANATEE STUDENTS

(Sarasota, FL, March 22, 2004) - USF Sarasota-Manatee announced a new group of deserving Selby Scholarship award recipients at a luncheon held to honor them at the University Club, March 9, 2004.

William G. Selby and Marie Selby Foundation awarded $45,000 in scholarships - $30,000 for 24 Selby Achievers and $15,000 for ten Selby Educators, for this academic year 2003/04.

Selby Achievers in attendance were: Kathryn Boston, Courtney Linn, Katie Mahoney, Shirley Roosevelt, Sehui Sutton, Thomas Hemingway, Marie Zeine, Denise Johnson, Katie Mahoney, and Jessica Sawyer. The new scholars had an average GPA of 3.59 to qualify. Many are juggling the demands of families and jobs in addition to their schoolwork. They live in Sarasota and Manatee counties and probably would not be able to attend college if not for the scholarship money. Majors include Finance, Business, Psychology and Interdisciplinary Social Sciences.

Several members of the Selby Foundation board attended the luncheon including Debra Jacobs, who presented the awards. Dr. Peter French, vice president and associate dean of USF Sarasota-Manatee, Lynette Edwards, Manatee school board assistant superintendent and USF campus board member and Clyde Nixon, chairman of Sun Hydraulics and USF Community Leadership Council vice-chairman were also present.

The purpose of the Selby Foundation is to improve the quality of life for residents of Sarasota and its bordering counties. Because of the Selby's interest in education, scholarships are given annually to students from the local area for undergraduate study.
