Selby
Foundation gives first "Achievers" scholarships to USF students
Five undergraduates each receive $1,500
(Sarasota,
FL, April 19, 2002) –
The
William G. and Marie Selby Foundation has given its first Selby Achievers
scholarships to benefit USF Sarasota/Manatee undergraduate students.
Five deserving students, each receiving $1,500
per year, were formally recognized recently at a private luncheon
sponsored by Foundation President Debra Jacobs.
Also attending were USF Sarasota/Manatee Campus CEO Dr. Laurey
Stryker, Campus Board Member Lynette Edwards and Foundation Chairman Dan
Bailey.
The
students have varied backgrounds and career directions.
Dina Dolega is a senior studying psychology full-time and is
a single parent active in the local Jewish community, 4-H and Girls,
Incorporated. Kathleen O’Brien is a junior whose major is in
English. She works full-time
and aspires to be a publisher one day.
Susan Savage is a senior studying psychology.
She is a single parent who works full-time and takes 9-10 course
credit hours each semester. Michelle
Smolder is a junior working toward her social work degree.
She is a single parent and works part-time.
Sehui Sutton is a native of South Korea who arrived in the
United States 12 years ago. She
is studying accounting, is a junior and works two full-time jobs.
Criteria
to be eligible for the Selby Achievers scholarship include:

Having
at least a 3.0 grade point average (GPA);
-
Taking
a minimum of nine credit hours per semester; and,
-
Residing
in Manatee, Sarasota, Charlotte or DeSoto County.
“The name Selby is a symbol of generosity, knowledge,
devotion to the environment, and the thriving spirit of the
Sarasota/Manatee area,” says campus CEO Dr.
Laurey Stryker.
“The Selby Achievers scholarships provide another
invaluable student service at USF Sarasota/Manatee.
USF wants students to achieve and we know scholarships must be in
place to help make that happen.”
“A
new tradition has started between the Selby Foundation and USF
Sarasota/Manatee,” says Foundation President Debra Jacobs.
“Honoring the outstanding achievements of local USF students
helps to highlight the value of public higher education in our
community.”
The
University of South Florida Sarasota/Manatee Campus offers 25 degree
programs for students to complete at the undergraduate and graduate
levels. Currently serving
2,300 students annually, the campus is located at the Sarasota/Manatee
County line on 140 acres, touching the shoreline of Sarasota Bay and
adjacent to the Sarasota/Bradenton International Airport.
It is part of the University of South Florida, the second largest
university in Florida with more than 37,000 students, a Research I
institution, and one of the top 20 largest universities in the United
States.
