The Senior Academy Offers Lifelong
Learning The USF Senior Academy at the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee is a continuing, noncredit education program for mature adults - lifelong learning in a university setting. Housed on campus in the Sudakoff Conference Center, the Senior Academy is a part of a consortium of programs held at more than 300 major colleges and universities throughout the United States affiliated with Elderhostel Institute Network headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts. The Senior Academy is administered in a collegial environment "by the members for the members" under the auspices of the university Office of Academic Affairs. Operating upon the premise that "education is a journey, not a destination," Senior Academy members select their own topics and lead their own study and interest groups throughout the year. There is variety and something for everyone at Senior Academy. Featured classes include learning about computers and the Internet; how to start a home-based business; investing; digital photography; drawing; cultural programs; current issues; history; writing and publishing workshops; book review groups; photographing wildlife; and more. This fall, “Romanticism Through the Ages,” an interactive seminar with internationally-acclaimed Russia pianist Elenora Lvov, will feature a lecture-recital-discussion format. The Senior Academy held its first classes in January 1999 and has grown to about 450 members with 90 different courses. Classes are held throughout the year, with suitable breaks for holidays and vacation periods. For information or to sign up, visit www.sarasota.usf.edu/SeniorAcademy/ or call Senior Academy Director Bill Hooker at 941-359-4296.
