Sarasota/Manatee
campus and community leaders unveil expansion sign
New
classroom facility will accommodate anticipated enrollment growth

(Sarasota,
FL, June 5, 2002) –
A
champagne toast and sign unveiling took place the afternoon of Thursday,
May 23, as USF Sarasota/Manatee campus and community leaders celebrated
$1.425 million in master plan funding by the state legislature (pending
the Governor’s signature) to move forward with a new campus classroom
and office space facility.
Campus board members, members of the campus’s Community
Leadership Council (CLC), faculty and staff gathered outside the Powel
Crosley Mansion in Manatee County for the happy event.
State-owned property totaling 33 acres that is adjacent to the
Crosley Mansion will be the new facility’s location.
“The
master planning money is a down payment on our eventual expansion to the
new site,” says Campus Board Chairman Jan E. Smith.
“We really appreciate the efforts of our local legislative
delegation in getting these funds.”
CLC
Vice Chairman and USF alumnus Bob Turner, Vice President of Operations for
the Bradenton Herald, led the toast as glasses clinked and twinkled
in the late afternoon sun.
Afterward, Campus Board Member Cliff Walters and CLC Chairperson
Liz Lindsay, also a USF graduate and former chairperson of the Florida
Board of Regents, gently pulled a USF seal flag away from a 4 by 8-foot
sign that will be posted soon near the U.S. 41 entrance to the expansion
site.
The
University of South Florida Sarasota/Manatee Campus offers 25 degree
programs for students to complete at the undergraduate and graduate
levels. Currently serving
2,300 students annually, the campus is located at the Sarasota/Manatee
County line on 140 acres, touching the shoreline of Sarasota Bay and
adjacent to the Sarasota/Bradenton International Airport.
It is part of the University of South Florida, the second largest
university in Florida with more than 37,000 students, a Research I
institution, and one of the top 20 largest universities in the United
States.
Unveiling the campus EXPANSION sign!
A toast to the future!
