12 AREA BUSINESS AND CIVIC LEADERS HOLD USF SARASOTA-MANATEE SOUTH INAUGURAL ADVISORY COUNCIL MEETING
South County marks one-year anniversary of classes on MCC Venice site.

(Sarasota, FL, March 7, 2005) – The University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee South’s inaugural Advisory Council is set to meet at Manatee Community College Venice on Tuesday, March 15, at 2 p.m., in room 156 of Student Services, Building 100. The Council’s mission is to support USF Sarasota-Manatee South through leadership and offer insight on programs best suited to meet the workforce needs of surrounding communities.

South Sarasota County classes for USF Sarasota-Manatee began one year ago thanks to a grant from the Gulf Coast Community Foundation of Venice and a partnership with MCC Venice for sharing classroom facilities. As the program moves into its second academic year, it boasts a 112 percent enrollment increase and a 44 percent increase in the number of classes offered.

Members of the Advisory Council include five USF alumni, one current USF student, and representatives from 11 area businesses, civic organizations, and schools. It currently has 12 members, but more are welcome.

“As this area continues to grow, USF Sarasota-Manatee can serve as a valuable resource, providing the prestige of a nationally ranked university here in our own backyard,” said Susan Freeman, director of the USF Sarasota-Manatee South. “We invite anyone interested to contact us about becoming a member of the South Advisory Council. We are your hometown university and we value your interest in our programs.”

USF Sarasota-Manatee’s relationship with MCC allows students to continue their education once they’ve earned an associate’s degree.

USF Alumni members of the Advisory Council are Laurie Dignam, Key Agency; Jim and Tom Hinck, A.G. Edwards; Tamara Patzer, editor of the North Port Sun; and Tom Perkins, a financial advisor for Raymond James and Associates. Other members are Mary Jo Holleran, career counselor for Lemon Bay High School; George Kenney, North Port High School principal; Patrick Kerrwood, human resources director for Englewood Hospital; Joan McGill, MCC Venice campus CEO; Karen Mason, owner of Kustom Blinds and current USF student; Pat Ryan, vice president of operations at Venice YMCA; and Vicki Taylor, Venice City Council Member.

For information on becoming a member of the USF Sarasota-Manatee South Advisory Council, contact Freeman at (941) 408-1577.
