NEW GRANT ALLOWS USF SARASOTA-MANATEE TO OFFER 4-YEAR DEGREES AT MCC VENICE CAMPUS

(Sarasota, FL October 22, 2003) - USF Sarasota-Manatee will offer classes at Manatee Community College (MCC) Venice for the first time starting in January, thanks to a $476,137 grant given by the Gulf Coast Community Foundation of Venice.

USF Sarasota-Manatee will offer classes in arts and sciences, business, and education to students who will now be able to obtain a bachelor’s degree. “We’re elated,” Laurey Stryker, campus CEO, said on Tuesday evening when news of the grant was announced. “The grant from the foundation will allow us to jump-start something that is needed in an area that is growing rapidly. We’re ready to roll out the green-and-gold carpet.”

Classes will take place at MCC Venice, which is located between the growing cities of Venice, North Port, and Englewood.

Peter French, Associate Vice-President and Dean of Academic Affairs, said, “This program permits working adults to complete a degree close to where they work and live. By being on the MCC Venice campus we provide a seamless transition from Associate to Baccalaureate studies. This consolidates our strong partnership with MCC, strengthens the skills of the workforce, and helps build the local economy.”

Information sessions offered at MCC Venice will begin on November 5 and continue through January. The dates are: November 5 and 19, December 3 and 17, January 7 and 21, all sessions are from 6:00 - 7:00 pm. The address of the USF recruiting office is MCC Venice, 8000 Tamiami Trl, Faculty Office Building # 645. Sessions will meet in Room 170.
