USF Sarasota-Manatee to celebrate graduation weekend with Latin dancing and laughter

SARASOTA, FL (May 4, 2006) – The University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the USF System this weekend, with a full slate of events – all to be held on the bayfront of the USF Sarasota-Manatee campus.

USF Weekend is May 5-7 along beautiful Sarasota Bay.  It is traditionally an annual celebration of events and activities to invite the community to visit the campus.

On Friday, the “Salsa on the Bay” event, sponsored by the USF Alumni Association, will help celebrate Cinco de Mayo with an evening of Latin dancing and Latin cuisine – complete with the popular band Nuevos Generaciones and cuisine from Two Senoritas.

On Saturday afternoon, two local bands will perform as part of “Sunset on the Bay and Comedy Pre-Party.” Specifically, this event includes the Indie rock band Signal 76, and folk troubadour Rayzor (a.k.a Ray DeArcangelis).

On Saturday evening, nationally known actor and comedian Harland Williams will be the featured performer for “Comedy on the Bay” sponsored by the Student Government Association.  Williams has appeared in the movies Dumb and Dumber, There’s Something About Mary and Sorority Boys among many others, and will be presented by Sarasota’s own Les McCurdy of McCurdy’s Comedy Theatre.

On Sunday, USF Sarasota-Manatee’s Spring Commencement Ceremonies will wrap up the weekend’s schedule of activities.

While USF Sarasota-Manatee celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2004, the entire USF System, (which includes the original campus in Tampa and the regional campuses in Sarasota-Manatee, Lakeland and St. Petersburg) celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.

Tickets for “Salsa on the Bay” are $50 for the public and $30 for students with proper I.D., and are available by calling Ross Allen at (941) 356-6093.

“Comedy on the Bay” tickets are available through Ticketmaster or the USF Sarasota-Manatee Business Office, on campus in building USS 805A.  The event is $15 for the public, $10 for students with proper I.D. and free to USF students.  Tickets may also be bought at the door the night of the event for $20.  There is no cost for “Sunset on the Bay and Comedy Pre-Party.”

Free parking will be available on the USF Sarasota-Manatee campus, located at 5700 North Tamiami Trail.  Lawn chairs and blankets are permitted.  Food and beverages will be available. Coolers, cameras, umbrellas, pets or refunds are not allowed.
