USF Sarasota-Manatee hosts record number of new adjunct faculty members at Fall faculty orientation session

Dr. Richard “Dick” King, the new associate dean of the College of Education at USF Sarasota-Manatee, and Dr. Laurey Stryker, Campus CEO, pose for a photo at the 2006 Fall Adjunct Faculty Orientation.  Fall classes at the college’s new regional campus started Monday, August 28.

SARASOTA, FL (September 8, 2006) – A record number of new adjunct faculty members joined USF Sarasota-Manatee for the start of this academic year -- and more faculty will continue to be hired throughout the year.

More than 70 faculty members came to the Fall 2006 faculty orientation session on August 17 to learn about the new USF regional campus here -- and to become familiar with details related to their new classrooms. They also learned more about the wide variety of teaching resources and instructional technology in the new building.

The faculty orientation is held each year for new adjunct faculty, and for resident faculty who want an opportunity to meet with new incoming faculty members.

“We have created a new place of superior learning,” said Dr. Peter French, Associate Vice President and Dean.  “The core of learning at USF Sarasota-Manatee is the faculty, and you are all valued.”

This year, USF Sarasota-Manatee plans to hire 26 additional resident faculty members to be based at this regional campus – raising the number of resident faculty at USF Sarasota-Manatee to 78 and the adjunct faculty numbers to 107.

Faculty members in attendance last week were presented with information about Cook Library (which will continue to be shared with New College of Florida), Human Resources, Disabilities Services, and the technology at the new regional campus, which opened for classes on August 28.

“The classrooms have all been equipped with the very latest technology, so we are requiring each of the faculty members to be ‘classroom technology-certified’ before beginning their teaching inside their classrooms,” said French.  “The technology has extraordinary potential to enhance the instructional process.”

Also during the orientation, three new associate deans were introduced to the faculty members.  Dr. R. Eugene Klippel is the new associate dean of the College of Business as well as a professor of Marketing.  Dr. Richard “Dick” King is the new associate dean of the College of Education as well as a professor of Educational Leadership. Dr. Jane Rose is the new associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.

“This is a time for new beginnings,” said Dr. Laurey Stryker, Campus CEO.  “We have a commitment to our students to bring new levels of excellence to our campus.  This new campus will dramatically improve the educational experience of all our students.”

USF Sarasota-Manatee is an upper-level campus for those with an associate’s or bachelor’s

degree interested in pursuing a baccalaureate or master’s degree, professional certification, or continuing education credit. The regional campus offers the prestige of a nationally ranked research university with the convenience of a hometown campus, including classes in south Sarasota County at MCC Venice.
