Campus Board Represents Strong Leadership

In 2001, the Florida Legislature required USF’s regional campuses to establish their own boards to operate as separate organizational and budget entities of USF. Each campus’ state appropriations are now separate line items in the annual state budget. The University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee Campus Board first met October 24, 2001. They represent an integral part of the success and growth of the campus during their short tenure thus far. The same five people have been together for three years.

“We are fortunate to have a strong campus board with excellent leadership from a variety of backgrounds for both counties. These are interested, dedicated, hard-working individuals who touch many people in both communities,” said Campus Board Chairman Jan Smith.

The five members of the Sarasota-Manatee Campus Board are:

  • Charles R. Baumann, CPA, Kerkering, Barberio & Company, Sarasota County resident;

  • Lynette Edwards, Assistant Superintendent of Academics, Manatee County School Board, Manatee County resident;

  • Jan Smith, President, Jan Smith and Company, Manatee County resident;

  • Robert L. Soran, President of Jack Graham, Inc.; and,

  • Cliff Walters, attorney and partner with Blalock, Landers, Walters & Vogler, P.A., Manatee County resident.

  • Soran was appointed to the USF Board of Trustees in July 2001, and was designated by the Board of Trustees to be a member of the Sarasota-Manatee Campus Board.

    The campus board members’ powers include:

  • Review and approve the annual legislative budget for the campus;

  • Approve and submit an annual operating plan and budget to the USF Board of Trustees; and,

  • Enter into central support service contracts with the USF Board of Trustees for any services the Sarasota-Manatee campus cannot provide more economically.

  • “In reality, they do much more than that,” said USF Board of Trustees Chairman Dick Beard. “They are a real force when it comes to advocacy and fund raising.”
