Seven Years of Distinguished Alumni

This year marks the 7th annual Manatee/Sarasota Alumni Chapter's Distinguished Alumni Awards honoring USF alumni living in Sarasota or Manatee County who have made significant contributions to their professions, the University and the community. Winners for 2004 will be announced Tuesday, November 16. These nominees represent an impressive sampling of our local educators, administrators, medical personnel, marketing, advertising and journalism professionals, judges and public officials, scientists, researchers, bankers, farmers, and volunteers. Past local Distinguished Alumni Roger Frazee also received the USF Donald A. Gifford Alumni Service Award for 2004.

Qualified recipients can receive an award based on criteria outlined in four categories: campus service, community leadership, professional achievement and the president’s award.

Campus Service encompasses loyal service to USF Sarasota-Manatee either through the Alumni Association, an affiliated group, or through direct service to the administration. Community Leadership recognizes one or more individuals who have demonstrated a commitment to community service by donating significant time to charitable activities. The President’s Award goes to an individual who has provided outstanding service to the University community, and whose professional achievements have brought honor and distinction to USF. Professional Achievement honors one or more individuals who have distinguished themselves in their chosen profession while also making a significant contribution to the larger community.

Six past winners and members of the Manatee/Sarasota Alumni Chapter were appointed to the USF Alumni Association National Board. Dr. Anila Jain, a Bradenton resident, is past national chairman and will serve as immediate past chairman and board member. Other national board members from the Bradenton-Sarasota area are Roger Frazee; Glory Hernandez, the Sarasota-Manatee regional campus representative; David Hicks, an elected 2-year director; Steve McCormack; and Diana Michel.

Frazee was the recipient of the University’s prestigious Donald A. Gifford Alumni Service Award for 2004. This award recognizes distinguished volunteer service to the University over an extended period of time. He has served in many leadership positions for the University, including serving a board member of the Manatee/Sarasota Alumni chapter for over fifteen years. He served as President of the chapter from 1999 to 2003, during which time the chapter received the outstanding chapter award three times and honorable mention twice. He also serves on the USF Sarasota-Manatee Community Leadership Council and recently spent months lobbying for state money and community support for the USF Crosley Campus Center. Over the last three years he spent numerous hours supporting additional USF programs in Tallahassee. Frazee is a life member of the Alumni Association.
