New Faculty, Chief Information Officer at
USF Sarasota-Manatee SARASOTA, FL, (August 1, 2005) – Seven new faculty and an information officer have joined the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee. New faculty members are Dr. Rebecca Burns-Hoffman, visiting instructor in secondary education for English to speakers of other languages (ESOL); Dr. James Curran, assistant professor in marketing; Dr. J. Lynn McBrien, assistant professor of psychological and social foundations; Dr. Thomas Pencek, finance instructor; Dr. Richard Reich, visiting instructor of psychology; Dr. Lenford C. Sutton, assistant professor in educational leadership and policies studies; and Julia M. White, special education instructor. In addition to newly hired faculty, Greg Mallay is the new chief information officer. Burns-Hoffman has taught courses for ESOL at the University of Miami, Florida Gulf Coast University and USF. She has additional early childhood and elementary education teaching experience with the Redlands Christian Migrant Association and Dade County schools. She holds a bachelor’s in English and education from the University of Southern Colorado, a master’s in linguistics from California State University at Northridge, and a doctorate in linguistics from the University of Colorado. Curran comes to USF Sarasota-Manatee from Bryant University in RI, and has taught at Northeastern University, Bryant College in MA, and the University of Rhode Island. He graduated from Fordham University with a bachelor’s in mathematics, and earned a master’s in marketing and finance, and a doctorate in business administration and marketing, from the University of Rhode Island. McBrien graduated summa cum laude from Clarion University with a bachelor’s in English and a secondary education teacher certification. He received a master’s in English from Purdue University and a doctorate from the Division of Educational Studies at Emory University in Atlanta. He has taught at Emory since 2002, and has served as an adjunct professor at the University of Georgia and the University of Southern Maine. He also has teaching experience in Maine and Connecticut public school districts. Prior to USF, Pencek spent seven years as an associate professor of business for Meredith College in NC. He holds a bachelor’s in business administration and accounting from the State University College at Fredonia, NY, and a master’s and doctorate from Mississippi State University. Reich has taught at the College of Charleston in South Carolina as well as at USF in Tampa. He earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the College of Charleston. He graduated from USF with a master’s in clinical psychology and doctorate in experimental psychopathology. Sutton comes to USF from Florida A&M University, where he was an assistant professor and coordinator for the Master’s of Educational Leadership program. He is a past administrator of Orange and Seminole counties public schools. He holds a bachelor’s in economics from Florida State University; a master’s in educational leadership from Stetson University in DeLand, FL, and a doctorate from the University of Florida. White is a doctoral candidate at Syracuse University in the School of Education. She earned her master’s in special education from George Washington University and a bachelor’s in English from the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. She has extensive teaching and research experience at Syracuse University and has lectured abroad on English as a foreign language Before joining USF Sarasota-Manatee, CIO Mallay held positions in both the business sector and public k-12 education, and has over 13 years of experience in the information technology field. He was employed in the Pinellas County Schools Technology Department and was the Director of IT for a large Canadian company in the metropolitan Toronto area. Born in Guyana, South America, and raised in New York City, Mallay earned his bachelor’s degree at the City University of New York. He looks forward to pursuing his master’s at USF, and he is excited about living in the Sarasota-Manatee area. USF Sarasota-Manatee is an upper-level campus for those with an associate’s or bachelor’s degree interested in pursuing a baccalaureate or master’s degree, professional certification, or continuing education credit. The campus offers the prestige of a nationally ranked research university with the convenience of a hometown campus, including classes in south Sarasota County at Manatee Community College Venice. The Crosley Campus Center, scheduled to open in fall 2006, will be a 100,000-square-foot facility with 24 classrooms; a 190-seat lecture/exhibition hall; seminar and video-conferencing rooms; computer labs; a daycare center; student gathering places; faculty and staff offices; a technology and learning center; dining facilities; and training facilities for the School of Hotel and Restaurant Management. Once completed, the Center will offer some 800 courses annually in 39 academic programs. |
