POPULAR COUNTY JUDGE AND BLUE GRASS MUSICIAN TO TEACH CRIMINOLOGY AT USF SARASOTA-MANATEE SOUTH MCC VENICE SITE

(Sarasota, FL, May 12, 2005) – Judge Doug Henderson will strike a pleasant chord with Criminology students at the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee South this summer. The Manatee County Court Judge and local Blue Grass musician will be at USF Sarasota-Manatee’s Manatee Community College Venice site on Mondays, from 6-9:30 p.m., teaching Substantive Criminal Law for both degree-seeking and non-degree-seeking students. This is the first semester this popular class is being offered at the USF Sarasota-Manatee South location.

Classes begin May 16 and run through July 22, and registration is open through the first week of class. Henderson enhances the curriculum with guest speakers from his many professional contacts in law enforcement fields. For information on how to register, call (941) 408-1577, or e-mail Director Susan Freeman at
sfreeman@sar.usf.edu. For directions to USF Sarasota-Manatee South and general information about classes and degree programs, visit www.sar.usf.edu and click on the South County link.

Henderson was elected to office in 1994 and has been an adjunct professor of criminal law at USF for more than 20 years. He has taught at USF Sarasota-Manatee for the past 11 years. Students benefit from his perspective and experience as an assistant State Attorney and judge, as well as a private-practice attorney. He is president-elect of the statewide Conference of County Court Judges, a member of the Manatee County Bar Association, and the High School Mock Trial State Advisory committee.

In addition to being a judge and college instructor, Henderson is the bass player for a local blue grass band called Manatee River Blue Grass. The band is made up of musical law enforcement officials who play at local venues when they can all get together at the same time.

USF Sarasota-Manatee offers courses toward bachelor's degrees on the campus of MCC Venice thanks to a $476,137 grant given by the Gulf Coast Community Foundation of Venice. Classes are available in General Business, Elementary Education, Interdisciplinary Social Sciences, and Bachelor of Applied Science (A.S. to B.S.) in General Business Administration and Criminology. Academic Advisors are at the MCC Venice site on Mondays from10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Thursdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., in the breezeway of the Student Services building to advise students who want to continue their college education beyond the associate’s degree, or who need classes to maintain professional certifications. The USF Sarasota-Manatee and Manatee Community College 2+2 joint admissions program also is available. This program combines the resources of the University and the convenience of the Community College, putting students starting at the Community College on a track for a baccalaureate degree through USF.
