New Book Focuses on Multigenerational Relationships Across Cultures

SARASOTA, FL, (June 14, 2005) –
Dr. Elizabeth Larkin, associate professor in the College of Education at the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee, was one of four editors of “Intergenerational Relationships: Conversations on Practices and Research Across Cultures.” The book has become an important text for educators and students of the emerging field of intergenerational studies and research. It illustrates intergenerational perspectives from Europe, Africa and Asia, while providing tools for coping with the complexity of today’s global society.

The book is a collection of 14 papers culled from a larger group presented at a 2003 colloquium on global intergenerational research, programs and policy at the University of Pittsburg titled “Enhancing Global Social Change Through Intergenerational Initiatives.”

Two intergenerational categories -- relationships in families and relationships in communities – highlighted in the book provide insight into how modern technologies transform societies. The importance of maintaining cultural identity through relationships between different age groups is another emphasis. The book also presents the view that the interdependence of multiple generations and a society’s common goals are inseparable. Authorities reveal how international intergenerational initiatives could contribute to understanding among different groups and cultures.

“Cultures from Africa, Asia and Europe value connections among people of different ages differently, and these relationships are used to address crucial social problems,” Larkin said. “This multicultural collection presents strong reasons for taking an intergenerational approach to solving social issues; for understanding how culture changes practice; and for appreciating the importance of protecting human values in times of technological innovation, geographic mobility, and shifting economies.”

Larkin’s research includes looking at the professional development of educators as well as studying intergenerational initiatives that bring older adults and younger populations together for mutual benefit. She is on the editorial board of the Journal of Intergenerational Relationships and is a founding member of the International Consortium for Intergenerational Programs (ICIP). She has received awards for her intergenerational research from the National Intergenerational Caucus of Early Childhood Professionals and Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Suncoast. Larkin earned her doctorate and master’s in administration, planning and social policy at Harvard University. She also holds a master’s in early childhood education from Bank Street College of Education in New York and a bachelor’s degree from Bard College.

“Intergenerational Relationships: Conversations on Practices and Research Across Cultures” was published simultaneously as the Journal of Intergenerational Relationships, Volume 2, Nos. 3 and 4, and by The Haworth Press Inc. Copies are available at orders@HaworthPress.com.
