USF SARASOTA-MANATEE SOUTH SEES
ENROLLMENT TRIPLE SINCE JANUARY 2004 IN RAPIDLY EXPANDING COMMUNITY Local students say convenient program makes pursuing higher education easier. (Sarasota, FL, May 26, 2005) – As Venice, North Port and other communities south experience exponential growth, the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee South at Manatee Community College fills a higher education need. The initiative, made possible by a partnership with the Gulf Coast Community Foundation of Venice, has grown from 66 students to 203 since January 2004. The site provides a convenient venue for students with an associate’s or bachelor’s degree to pursue a higher degree or satisfy professional continuing education requirements while continue to work and support local economies. USF Sarasota-Manatee South not only celebrated a birthday this year and saw a marked increase in enrollment, a newly created advisory council held an inaugural meeting March 15. “We look forward to continuing to expand our course offerings,” said USF Sarasota-Manatee South Director Susan Freeman. USF Sarasota-Manatee offers the prestige of a top-tier national university on a convenient hometown setting. The convenience makes it possible for some students to pursue a bachelor’s degree that might not be possible if it were not for local classes offered at the MCC Venice site -- students such as Karen Mason, owner of Custom Draperies & Blinds and Englewood resident, who is majoring in Elementary Education. Mason wanted to finish college and become a teacher, but she got married, started a family and her plans were put on hold. “Running a business and taking care of a family doesn’t leave much spare time,” Mason said. “I was so excited when classes were offered locally. Driving to Tampa or even Sarasota was out of the question. Now, if things go as planned, I will graduate in fall 2006.” USF Sarasota-Manatee is an upper-level campus for those with an associate’s or bachelor’s degree interested in pursuing a baccalaureate or master’s degree, professional certification, or continuing education credit. The campus offers the prestige of a national Research 1 university with the convenience of a hometown campus, including classes in south Sarasota County at Manatee Community College Venice. |
