Dr. John R. Walker is a professor of hotel and restaurant management at the School of Hotel and Restaurant Management at the University of South Florida, Sarasota Manatee campus. John is the former Dean and Marshall Professor of the School of Hospitality Management at United States International University, San Diego, California.

John’s years of industry experience includes management training at the Savoy Hotel London.  Followed by terms as food and beverage manager, assistant rooms division manager, catering manager, and general manager with Grand Metropolitan Hotels, Selsdon Park Hotel, Rank Hotels, Inter-Continental Hotels, and the Coral Reef Resort Barbados, West Indies.

For the past twenty-one years he has taught at two-and four-year schools in Canada and the United States. In 1999 he received the President’s award for Scholarship.   He has also received the President’s award of Merit based on teaching excellence, scholarship and service - each year since its inception in 1992.

In addition to being a Hotel, Restaurant, and Tourism Management consultant, he has been published in The Cornell Hotel Restaurant Administration Quarterly, The Hospitality Educators Journal and is a member of the editorial review board of the journal: Progress in Tourism and Hospitality Research and The Journal of Human Resources in Hospitality and Tourism. He is an advisory board member for Prentice Hall’s Hospitality and Tourism publications. John has also been invited to teach and give seminars in Thailand; The Philippines; Taiwan; Japan; Germany; Switzerland; England; Canada and Mexico.  

John is a leading author of hospitality and tourism textbooks, having authored or co-authored the following texts, many of which have been translated into several different languages:

·                          Introduction to Hospitality: published by Prentice Hall now in its 3rd.edition. (2002).

·                          The Restaurant: from Concept to Operation 3rd Ed, with Donald E. Lundberg, published by John Wiley & Sons. (2001).

·                          Red Carpet All The Way: a story about the top hotels, resorts, spas, and cruse ships, with Donald E. Lundberg. Hospitality and Tourism Publications (2003).

·                          Supervision in the Hospitality Industry, with Jack E. Miller and Karen E. Drummond, now in its 4th. Ed., published by John Wiley and Sons in (2003).

·                          Tourism, to be published by Tourism Publications. (2003).

·                          Introduction To Hospitality Management, Prentice Hall. (2003).

·                          International Tourism, to be published by Tourism Publications, (2004).

·                          He was a contributing author to The Encloypedia of Tourism, Published by Routledge.

·                          He is currently writing a text entitled: Hospitality Human Resources to be published by Prentice Hall in 2004.

 John is a past president if the Pacific chapter of the Council on Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Education (CHRIE).  He is a Certified Hotel Administrator and a Certified Foodservice Management Professional.

 John enjoys traveling, tennis, sailing, skiing, swimming, volleyball and a variety of cultural, recreational and artistic activities. He is married to Josielyn D. Teves and they live in Sarasota, Florida and Santa Maria, Ilocos Sur, Philippines. They have Twins Christopher and Selina.
