The Hunger Games is this year's One-Book Selection - Arts & Sciences students to host a discussion

HungerGames

Students in the College of Arts and Sciences at USF Sarasota-Manatee will be hosting a discussion of The Hunger Games Wednesday, February 15, 4-6pm, in Selby Auditorium.  A panel of USFSM students will each talk briefly about an aspect of the book that has most intrigued them, and they will seek comments from audience members about their impressions.  Because this book has been so popular among teen readers, the college students are particularly hopeful that high school students who are fan of the book will bring their insights to the discussion.
The event is FREE but space is limited.  Register online at http://www.sarasota.usf.edu/hungergames/

Louise Wilkinson to speak at USF Sarasota-Manatee
Understanding Language in Diverse Classrooms: What All Teachers Need to Know

Wilkinson

Friday, February 24, 5:30-6:45 pm, USF Sarasota-Manatee, Room A 217

With the increasing linguistic and cultural diversity of students in U.S. schools, all teachers, regardless of the content area or grade they teach, need research based strategies to support students in developing academic English language proficiency.
In this talk, Louise Wilkinson offers a model of how academic language leaning takes place and describes the critical role of teachers in that model. She will provide examples of materials and sample lessons to help educators prepare to teach all their students in diverse classrooms.

CAS Faculty visit Mérida, Mexico, to build partnership with Universidad Autónoma del Yucatán

In early December 2011, CAS faculty members Mike Fehily (Spanish) and Robin Danzak (Communication Sciences & Disorders) traveled to Mérida, Mexico, to meet with faculty and students at Universidad Autónoma del Yucatán (UADY). USFSM and UADY have established a partnership thanks to the Sarasota-Mérida Sister Cities relationship. During the visit, Mike Fehily met with undergraduate UADY students of the English Education program who participate as E-Pals for USFSM students in Sr. Mike's Spanish class. The participating UADY students received English dictionaries donated by Rotary/Sister Cities of Sarasota. Robin Danzak participated in a faculty meeting of the College of Education, and also presented her research on Spanish-speaking, English language learners to interested students and faculty. Through the use of Skype, a diverse group of USFSM faculty was able to meet a group of UADY professors to discuss potential research collaborations. Mike and Robin also met with the administration of the UADY College of Education to discuss ways to increase interaction and collaboration between the two institutions. Please visit http://vimeo.com/33622413 to view a video summarizing the experience.
