Honors Thesis (IDH 4970)
- IDH 4970 (3 credits) is an independent-study course
- Students enroll in IDH 4970 the fall term following the spring seminar and the summer project.
- Once begun, if they are unable to complete the project satisfactorily, they take an "I" grade and complete the project in the next term. If students cannot complete the thesis within two semesters, they are unable to graduate with honors.
- The end-product of this independent study is a long paper, of at least 40 pages and composed of multiple chapters, including an introduction and a conclusion.
- The final draft must be submitted no later than 6 weeks before the end of classes for that term, so there is plenty of time for the thesis advisors to help students grow to more mature expectations by suggesting further revisions. A project that does not have advisory approval by this time is not on track, and the student will likely need to be assigned an incomplete grade.
- The revised final draft of the thesis must be fully approved by the thesis advisor no later than three weeks before that last week of classes. If approved, the thesis is then be read by another faculty member, designated as an “outside reader.” This faculty member might be at USFSM, another USF campus, or even another institution, such as New College, wherever the most appropriate academic “expert” to read that thesis might be found.
