USF Sarasota-Manatee and Verizon hosting reception to announce Internet Safety workshops for mature adults

SARASOTA, FL (October 8, 2009) – On Monday, Oct. 12 at 4:30 p.m. the University of South Florida-Sarasota-Manatee and Verizon will host a reception at the Selby Auditorium on the USF Sarasota-Manatee campus to provide a status report and update on the Verizon Community Workshops.

USF Sarasota-Manatee is hosting a series of free Internet Safety workshops this fall designed specifically for computer users in the 50+ adult community. The workshops will take place at various locations in Bradenton and Sarasota in October and November.

The workshops, funded through a $25,000 grant from the Verizon Foundation, are being held to educate people ages 50+ about potential online risks such as credit card and computer fraud, banking transactions and identity theft.

The workshops will be held at the following locations:

• Monday, October 5, 2009 – 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Renaissance on 9th, 1816 9th Street West in Bradenton. The topic will be identity theft.

• Monday, October 5, 2009 – 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Bay Village, 8400 Vamo Road in Sarasota. The topic will be internet safety.

• Friday, October 9, 2009 – 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Aston Gardens at Pelican Pointe, 1000 Aston Gardens Dr in Venice. The topic will be credit card fraud.

• Monday, October 12, 2009 – 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Renaissance on 9th, 1816 9th Street West in Bradenton. The topic will be online banking. • Monday, October 12, 2009 – 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at The Fountains at Lake Pointe Woods, 3260 Lake Pointe Blvd in Sarasota. The topic will be credit card fraud.

• Friday, October 16, 2009 – 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Freedom Village Auditorium in Landings, 6406 21st Ave W in Bradenton. The topic will be internet safety.

• Monday, October 19, 2009 – 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Renaissance on 9th, 1816 9th Street West in Bradenton. The topic will be Credit Card Fraud.

• Monday, October 26, 2009 – 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Plymouth Harbor Auditorium, 700 John Ringling Blvd. The topic will be credit card fraud/online banking.

• Monday, November 9, 2009 – 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Senior Friendship Center, 1888 Brother Geenen Way in Sarasota

USF Sarasota-Manatee faculty will lead the workshops and provide in-depth information for computer users on many key Internet Safety issues.
